Consultant ophthalmologist, Gerard Ainsworth talking about cataract removal surgery.

A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens in the eye. The natural lens is a ball-shaped structure which is flattened which does the final bit of focusing on the back of the eye. If this becomes cloudy, this interferes with the vision.

Cataracts are normally caused as a normal part of ageing. There are other conditions that can contribute to the development of cataracts such as diabetes and also lifestyle changes such as smoking and excessive exposure to ultra-violet light.

The treatment involves an operation where a small incision will be made to give access to the lens of the eye. The original lens will be removed and replaced with an artificial lens.

Your vision should improve.

New glasses may improve your vision to some extent but if the cataract is too advanced, glasses will not help. In this case, surgery is the only option to restore your vision.

The operation is painless, however it is not sensation free and it is common to feel pressure during the operation. You may experience an ache around the eye for a day after the operation.
