About

I am a pure knee arthroplasty surgeon, undertaking partial knee replacement (medial, lateral and patellofemoral), total knee replacement and revision knee replacement surgery.

I qualified from Manchester Medical School in 2012 having completed a PhD in tendon development at the Wellcome Centre for Cell Matrix Research, an international centre of excellence in matrix biology. I undertook Foundation Doctor training in North London at the Royal Free Hospital before moving to the North East in 2014 as an academic-clinical trainee in Orthopaedics. During this time, I established an internationally recognised programme of research on knee stiffness and pain after knee replacement and I continue to be research active in the area of problematic, painful and stiff knee replacement, publishing and speaking at national and international meetings regularly.

I completed orthopaedic training in Newcastle and Northumbria in 2022, before undertaking fellowships in the Exeter Knee Reconstruction Unit at the Princess Ellizabeth Orthopaedic Centre (2023-2024) with Professor Andy Toms and Mr John Phillips. In Exeter I trained in primary arthroplasty, including robotic arthroplasty, undertaking more than 100 robotic cases, and in revision knee arthroplasty (both infected and aseptic revision). From Exeter I moved to the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre (NOC) in Oxford (2023-2024), a world centre of excellence in infection management and pioneers of partial (unicompartmental) knee replacement, where I was trained by Mr Abtin Alvand and Professor Andrew Price.

I returned to the North East as a consultant at Northumbria in April 2024. I am entirely focused on primary (first time) and re-do (revision) surgery, in particular partial knee replacement. I am among the highest volume knee replacement surgeons in the country (more than 300 cases per year, including >150 partial knee replacements). I am heavily involved with the national programme of Revision Knee Networks, which has transformed revision knee surgery across England, through development of Major Revision Centres, where the most complex revision knee surgery is now concentrated. NHCT is a Major Revision Centre in the NE of England. I have national roles as a member of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK) Executive Committee, National Revision Network Steering Committee and as faculty for the BASK National MRC Instructional Course, which is held annually and recommended training for all surgeons in England undertaking revision knee surgery.

At Northumbria, I work closely with the MRC team, including Nicola Sinclair (revision clinical specialist) and Laura Doyle (regional network multidisciplinary team coordinator) to develop the regional revision network and improve care for patients with problematic, infected, or failed knee replacements. This work often is undertaken with expert plastic surgeons, and the Bone Infection Unit, to care for patients with complex infection following knee replacement.

I am pleased to receive referrals for any patient with degenerative knee disease and any patient with problematic knee replacements, and run clinics at North Tyneside, Wansbeck, Cramlington and Hexham.

Treatments & Tests

  • Knee replacement – partial (uni-compartmental), patello-femoral and total
  • Revision knee replacement

Research

I hold an honorary clinical lecturer post at Newcastle University and collaborate with the Fibrosis Research Team, led by Professor Derek Mann and Dr Lee Borthwick, to undertake studies on problems after knee replacement surgery, including pain and stiffness. I have published more than 50 peer-reviewed articles and am regularly invited to speak at national and international meetings on knee arthroplasty.
