About

Mr Venkatachalam specialises in upper limb conditions (shoulder, elbow, wrist and hands) including trauma, sports injuries, soft tissue disorders like cuff tears/ stiffness/dislocations with related problems and arthritis.

He performs arthroscopic (key hole) surgery for the shoulder (cuff repairs for rotator cuff tendon tears, stabilisations for shoulder dislocations/ subluxations, like releasing the lining of the joint for stiffness, arthroscopy of the elbow and wrist, other soft tissue procedures of the shoulder, elbow problems like tennis elbow and numerous hand disorders like Dupuytrens contracture, carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger fingers and arthritis of the base of thumb. He also offers shoulder replacements (resurfacing, total shoulder replacements, reverse total shoulder replacements), elbow replacements, and hand joint replacements.

In 2014 he was awarded prestigious fellowships for elbow and shoulder and sports trauma, working under internationally renowned American and French surgeons for shoulder surgery and replacements.

Mr.Venkatachalam joined the trust as a consultant in 2014. He graduated in medicine in 1993 and completed his higher specialist orthopaedic surgical training locally in the north east  in various hospitals in our trust as well as Newcastle, Sunderland, Durham and Middlesbrough.

He was awarded fellowships at two prestigious upper limb specialist units at Wrightington, Manchester and Sheffield for a year. He has also been awarded popular visiting fellowships from national organisations like British Elbow and Shoulder Society, and British Orthopaedic Sports Trauma Arthroscopy Association. He has visited internationally renowned shoulder keyhole surgeons and shoulder joint replacement surgeons in Texas, USA and France through this fellowships.
