Northumbria Health has funded a new spinal microscope, enabling spinal surgery to be carried out at Hexham General Hospital for the first time.
Northumbria Health, the private healthcare arm of Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, reinvests all profits generated from private patient activity back into the trust to support and enhance patient care.
The spinal microscope is a vital piece of equipment, making it possible to deliver specialist spinal procedures that have not previously been available at Hexham. This investment marks a significant step forward in expanding the range of services offered locally.
Cyrus Jensen, orthopaedic consultant at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We are incredibly grateful for this investment in such an essential piece of equipment. It will make a real difference to our patients, allowing many more people to receive specialist spinal surgery closer to home.”
The funding follows the completion of the final phase of the Hexham redevelopment programme, including the opening of new operating theatres. These modern, multi-purpose facilities provide additional capacity and flexibility, enabling the trust to deliver a broader range of procedures. Designed with the latest technology, they will improve efficiency, enhance safety, and provide a better experience for both patients and staff.
Chris Land, deputy director of private healthcare, said: “We are delighted to support this investment, which will directly benefit patients and local communities. Expanding services closer to where people live is incredibly important, and this is a great example of how reinvesting our income can make a tangible difference.
“At Northumbria Health, we remain committed to reinvesting our profits back into the trust to continually improve the quality of care we provide.”
